Dave Bautista has compared his Dune role to James Gunn’s Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy.
Former WWE champion turned actor Dave Bautista has never shied away from speaking his mind, especially when it comes to Marvel. Bautista made his major acting debut in Marvel Studios and James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, a film that saw him starring as Drax, a human-like alien who had no filter.
Dave Bautista’s performance as Drax was praised all-around, but the WWE champion had issues with the direction Marvel had taken the character. Namely, he wasn’t a fan of how Marvel and James Gunn sacrificed the character’s emotional sensibilities in favor of jokes. Bautista recently appeared in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, which some have deemed his best performance yet.
In a recent interview with ABC News, Dave Bautista called his Dune performance “a blessing” whilst taking a jab at his Guardians of the Galaxy character.
“The thing with this character was it just gave me an opportunity to showcase a different type of performance. And that’s what I really love about working with [director Denis Villeneuve], I get an opportunity to show myself as a performer in a different light. … I’m not just a guy in Guardians [of the Galaxy] walking around shirtless and saying stupid shit. [The role] really just gives me the opportunity to just play these like really, really deep characters. So that’s a blessing.”
Dave Bautista starred as Glossu Rabban in Dune, one of the film’s primary antagonists. Bautista previously worked with Denis Villeneuve on Blade Runner 2049, another role for which the WWE champion was widely praised. Bautista is set to wrap up his time with Marvel Studios in James Gunn’s upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which hits cinemas in 2023.
Here is the synopsis for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune:
Set in the distant future, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.
Denis Villeneuve directed Dune from a script he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts. The film stars Timothee Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and David Dastmalchian.
