The directors behind some episodes of Hawkeye discuss the “buddy-cop” dynamic between Clint Barton and Kate Bishop.
Directors Bert and Bertie join Rhys Thomas as the helmers behind the six episodes of Marvel Studios’ upcoming event series Hawkeye. Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, Jeremy Renner returns as Clint Barton, a newly retired Avenger that spends his Christmas season mentoring Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) in becoming a superhero.
The footage revealed for Hawkeye so far plays up the Christmas setting as well as the more humorous and upbeat dynamic that both Clint Barton and Kate Bishop share together. Bert and Bertie look to approach the titular character in a more upbeat and humorous way than Jeremy Renner portrayed him in the past. In particular, Bertie told GamesRadar that the Academy Award-nominated actor embraced his first standalone outing as the superhero and his new dynamic:
“I think that Jeremy was on board from the get-go with the tone of the show being not super serious the whole time; the slight absurdity of it and that buddy-cop dynamic.”
Rhys Thomas echoed the sentiment, praising Jeremy Renner’s new approach to Hawkeye:
“The amazing thing about Jeremy is that he’s just this incredibly natural actor in that there’s a reality to the way he performs. He finds the pitch of the scene and is ‘in it’. To me, the fun was trying to take that quality and find situations to play against. Where would you like to see this character be? Who do you want to see him interacting with to find that comedy? And it’s a fine line because you’ve still got a story to tell and all of the things that Marvel are famous for to incorporate.”
Jeremy Renner has displayed some humor as Hawkeye in the previous Marvel Cinematic Universe films, but is often one of the more “serious” characters in the entire franchise. Given that the character has massive concerns regarding the safety of his family as well as his dark, vengeful descent into his Ronin persona in Avengers: Endgame. It will be interesting to see how he confronts his past alongside his new mentee in Kate Bishop.
Here is the synopsis for Hawkeye:
“Former Avenger Clint Barton has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. Possible? Maybe with the help of Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a Super Hero. The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit.”
Hawkeye stars Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld, Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Brian d’Arcy James, and Alaqua Cox. Florence Pugh is expected to return in her Black Widow role.
Hawkeye is set to premiere with two episodes on November 24, exclusively on Disney Plus. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news regarding the future of Clint Barton and Kate Bishop in the MCU, and be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
