Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia teases that the Dwayne Johnson film will push the PG-13 boundaries.
During DC FanDome 2021, we got our first official footage from the highly-anticipated new DC Extended Universe film Black Adam. Dwayne Johnson has been preparing to bring the DC Comics character to the big screen for many years, and to see him in the suit kicking ass was one of the many highlights from the event that was not related to Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Similar to most DCEU films, it will go for the marketable PG-13 audience, but it’s safe to say the film won’t mess around.
According to producer Hiram Garcia, Black Adam is going to be heavy on the action sequences. Given the nature of the character, it looks like Dwayne Johnson will be bringing a lot of brutality to the role. While speaking with CBR, he teased that the film will be a hard PG-13 with the body count alone:
“Black Adam is edgy, right? That’s gonna be a PG-13 movie where it was very much like, say, The Dark Knight, where that pushed the edges of PG-13. I think we do that very much with Black Adam. We have a very high kill count in our movie.”
This hard PG-13 approach with Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam will be an interesting contrast to the more childlike energy from Zachary Levi’s Shazam!. While that film still leaned into some horror elements thanks to the sensibilities of director David F. Sandberg, it looks like this upcoming film will further explore the sheer power of the Wizard Shazam’s old champion.
In addition to Dwayne Johnson, the film stars Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate. Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, James Cusati-Moyer, and Bodhi Sabongui are also on board in undisclosed roles. Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions are producing the movie with Beau Flynn of FlynnPictureCo. FlynnPictureCo’s Scott Sheldon serves as an executive producer.
Black Adam is set to hit theaters on July 29, 2022. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming Dwayne Johnson film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
