In the UK, there is no shortage of cooler weather. Believe me—I’ve definitely come to understand that since moving from Australia a few years ago. From late October onwards, it officially becomes coat season, and that cycle of outerwear as a necessity rather than an option doesn’t end until at least March. Though, what I love about the UK is that in this country, cold weather does not equate to boring outfits, and this month’s street style proved just that.
Over the course of an afternoon, photographer Michaela Efford, video content creator Remi Afolabi and I set out to document the most inspiring autumn outfits we could find along East London’s fashionable hot spot Broadway Market. From patterned tights to check jackets, designer accessories and standout shades, the stylish women who crossed our path were certainly making an effort to ensure their winter wardrobes went beyond beanie hats and puffer coats into far more interesting territory.
One thing I am always struck by on each of our street style expeditions is just how resourceful the women we come across are. This time around, so many women noted they tracked down their beloved items on Depop or discovered their gems at their local thrift stores. Sustainability and a more circular shopping model always seem to be top-of-mind for the fashion enthusiasts we find in London. Keep scrolling to see the chicest autumn outfits we discovered recently.
Style Notes: Believe me when I tell you Yom had style, and we spotted it from a mile away. The bright-green coat, the orange jumper, the Marc Jacobs bag… It all just worked so well.
Style Notes: This was the last look we saw for the day, and it might have been my favourite of the bunch. An all-white autumn outfit will forever remind me of Maid in Manhattan, but Chanel managed to make the outfit formula infinitely cooler, updating the look with the addition of a Burberry trench. (Sorry, J.Lo, but it’s true.)
Style Notes: The moment I spotted Laetita I knew she had an interest in fashion, and it didn’t take long for her to reveal she was in fact a fashion graduate. The Telfar bag was my first piece of evidence, but add to that the Ganni coat and Mejuri jewellery, and there was no denying she’s a fashion devotee.
Style Notes: I’m calling it the Adele effect. Oxblood trench coats seem to be everywhere after the singer was spotted in one in her latest music video for Easy on Me. Taralee found her coat at Beyond Retro and paired it with check trousers and statement boots.
Style Notes: This felt like a quintessential London autumn outfit. I love the way Cecilia paired timeless basics with a statement scarf for a pop of colour.
Style Notes: Oyin was all smiles when we stopped to ask her for a photo on Broadway Market. She really tapped into 2021 trends with her tennis-inspired skirt and made the look autumn-appropriate with the addition of some patterned tights.
Style Notes: Cool would be an understatement when it comes to Meja’s look. Between the vintage leather trousers, CK boots and ACNE Studios shades, this look caught my attention for all the right reasons.
Style Notes: Beth’s teddy coat was definitely the cosiest look we spotted all day, and I loved the way she elevated the outfit by adding the Chanel bag and unique Converse embroidered sneakers.
Style Notes: I love spotting an Arket jacket in the wild. Linda paired the classic coat alongside blue jeans and boots for a look that is stylish yet feels effortless.
Style Notes: From the Chanel bag to the Fendi coat and Christopher Kane jumper, everything about Lucy’s look made my fashion-loving heart sing.
Style Notes: There is so much style in simplicity, and if you don’t believe me, may I direct you to Karen’s outfit above? Chic, chic, chic!
Style Notes: I immediately wanted to buy a pair of these Gucci glasses for myself after seeing them on Aneta. They’re the perfect statement accessory.
Style Notes: This is a great example of letting your accessories do the talking. Gracie has opted for such timeless staples but elevated the entire look with the addition of her orange sunnies and incredibly cool Depop-sourced rings.
