Eternals director Chloe Zhao has revealed who the other major character was in the film’s second post-credits sequence.
Major spoilers ahead for Eternals.
As Eternals comes to a close, both post-credits sequences tease the future of the characters in the film, as well as new ones set to get their own stories. While the major and much-talked-about reveal at the end of the first post-credits sequence is none other than Harry Styles’ as Eros, Thanos’ brother, it’s the second credits sequence that left many scratching their heads as they walked out of cinemas.
The second credits sequence sees Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman starting at a sword case that holds his family’s emblem. Dane, anxious to open the case, finally does so and lays his eyes on a sword as an eerie sound echoes from it. Whitman then translates the words etched above the sword, saying “Death is my reward.” The sword then begins to shoot as some liquid-like substance moves across it (it kind of looks like a symbiote). As he begins to touch the sword, Whitman declares that “I’m sorry, I have to try.” Then, the voice of a man not seen on screen says “Sure you’re ready for that, Mr. Whitman?”
As my screening ended, many began to audibly speculate who the voice was. Many believed it was Nick Fury, while others debated amongst their friends that it was Jeffrey Wright’s Watcher. Online speculation resulted in the same suspects popping up. It turns out all of them were wrong.
When speaking with Fandom, Chloe Zhao revealed that the voice at the end of the Eternals credits sequence is none other than Mahershala Ali’s Blade. Yes, Blade made his (off-screen) debut in Eternals.
“That was the voice of one of my favorite superheroes, Mr. Blade himself. Blade, Blade, Blade, yeah!”
Mahershala Ali was announced as Blade at 2019’s San Diego Comic-Con. His solo film is currently some ways away as it only recently found a director in a Bassam Tariq. Zhao then teased Ali’s upcoming solo film.
“You just have to wait for it. I don’t know what they’re doing with the movie, but Mahershala is is a treasure. It’s going to be epic.”
Here is the synopsis for Chloe Zhao’s Eternals:
“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
