Chloe Zhao opened up about the major star who made their MCU debut during the mid-credits scene of Eternals.
Major spoilers for Eternals ahead!
Eternals featured some major end-credits scenes, with the first featuring the MCU debut of Harry Styles as Starfox with his companion, Pip the Troll, voiced by Patton Oswalt. Styles’ character is also known as Eros and is Thanos’ brother.
In the months leading up to the release of Eternals, it was rumored that Harry Styles would appear in the project. Now that Eternals is out in theaters, director Chloe Zhao explained to Deadline how Styles’ appearance as Starfox came to be:
“Harry as Eros was very much a package deal for me. I pitched the idea of Pip the Troll and Eros to Kevin a while back, and I love the idea of exploring an Eternal who is beyond Titan and who may have influenced Thanos throughout the years the same way Eternals influenced us, earthlings. And then, it wasn’t like I suggested Eros, and let’s go find actors. I kept tabs on Harry since Dunkirk, I thought he was very interesting. After meeting him I realized he is that character—the same way I cast the rest of my cast. There’s so much of Eros in him. For me, if he says yes, and Kevin says yes, then it’s a go. And I’m very happy they both did.”
Here is the synopsis for Chloe Zhao’s Eternals:
“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
