Suicide Squad director David Ayer has shared a brand new behind-the-scenes photo of Jared Leto as the Joker.
One of the most inspired (and equally criticized) casting choices made in the comic book film industry in the last decade was bringing Jared Leto in as the Joker. Expectations were through the roof for his debut in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, though reception fell flat once the final product was screened. The film was dragged through the mud for its poor pacing, convoluted storyline, and spastic editing. And it didn’t help that Jared Leto’s gangster take on the Joker was barely given any screentime. Of course, this was all because of director David Ayer not receiving final cut privilege.
The fallout from David Ayer’s Suicide Squad led to Jared Leto expressing his frustration at Warner Bros. Since then, director David Ayer commented several times how the final product never reflected Leto’s true artistic sensibilities. David Ayer has now taken to Twitter to share a brand new, behind-the-scenes look at Jared Leto’s Joker, with a not-so-subtle caption teasing how great his performance was.
Much has been said about a hypothetical David Ayer’s Suicide Squad (a riff on Zack Snyder’s Justice League), though it’s highly unlikely that it will manifest now that Warner Bros. has moved on with James Gunn’s vision. Still, it is a shame that audiences were never treated to a proper look at both David Ayer’s vision for Task Force X and Leto’s unhinged performance as the Clown Prince of Crime that’s supposedly amazing.
Here is the synopsis for The Suicide Squad:
Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid, and Taika Waititi.
The Suicide Squad is now available on BluRay, 4K, DVD, and Digital Download. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the future of Jared Leto’s Joker and David Ayer, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
