Chloe Zhao Dropped Two Marvel Characters From ‘Eternals’ Roster

Chloe Zhao revealed that the original roster for Marvel Studios’ Eternals featured a dozen characters.

Eternals is set to debut later this weekend, making it one of the most unique films to come out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe machine. Focused on 10 immortal beings from the cosmos sent to protect Earth, the film will show them joining our customs and earliest civilizations as they take on the nefarious Deviants. 10 is a whole lot of characters to be working with, especially because none of these characters have received their own solo films.

It turns out that Eternals originally had 12 characters in its roster, but director Chloe Zhao dropped them because they didn’t add much to the overall film. Zhao explained why she let go of two characters while speaking with Fandom.

“There was 12 characters when I first read it; 12 Eternals. We had to let two go along the way.”

“Some characters don’t need the most screen time, it’s about what they do with the screen time. They have to be memorable. And when we looked at these 10 unique individuals, we thought about how they represent 10 aspects of human nature. They’ve been here for so long, who they become today is a big part of who we are. And so it was actually equally important that they remain memorable. All 10 of them had the same weight; not necessarily screen time, but the weight.”

It’s unclear who exactly these two scrapped characters were but seeing as the Marvel mythos continues to expand, it’s not unlikely to see them pop up in the future. As for the characters Chloe Zhao kept for their weight, it’ll be interesting to see which Eternals emerge as fan favorites in the coming weeks.

Here is the synopsis for the film:

“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”

Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.

Eternals will hit theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
