Robert Downey Jr. and Matt Damon will join Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming J. Robert Oppenheimer biopic.
Now that Christopher Nolan has tapped Cillian Murphy to star as the man behind the atom bomb and Emily Blunt as his wife Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer, the Interstellar director is rounding out the biopic’s supporting cast. The Hollywood Reporter says that Matt Damon will star as Lt. Gen. Leslie Groves, the director of The Manhattan Project. The infamous project led to the creation of the atomic bomb. Robert Downey Jr. is set to appear as Lewis Strauss, the Atomic Energy Commissioner, who butted heads with Oppenheimer throughout the creation of the bomb.
The film will begin production in early 2022 and be shot totally in IMAX. Oppenheimer will be released theatrically on July 21, 2023. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer.
