Kumail Nanjiani responded to Eternals getting review bombed by trolls ahead of its release.
Marvel Studios’ upcoming film Eternals is set to hit theaters next week, and as of right now, early reviews for the film have been very mixed. While some critics have been digging director Chloe Zhao’s film, others (including our own Nathaniel Brail) found the film to be a swing and a miss. It is worth noting that criticism against the film is legitimate for those who have seen it, but some trolls online are already review-bombing the film without having seen it. And in the case for the trolls, some have review-bombed the film on IMDb for its inclusive ensemble of characters that includes Brian Tyree Henry’s Phastos, the first MCU superhero to be portrayed as gay. Kumail Nanjiani, who plays Kingo responded to the situation.
In a now-deleted tweet, Kumail Nanjiani responded to the apparent review-bombing of Eternals as reported by The Direct, given its inclusion of an LGBTQ+ character in the story. Here is a screenshot, courtesy of CBR:
Kumail Nanjiani’s defense of Eternals and its inclusion of an LGBTQ+ character serves as a reminder of previous instances in which films were the target of review-bombing before their release. Trolls have review-bombed films such as Captain Marvel and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker among others for its inclusion of prominent roles for women and people of color among other things.
When it comes to Eternals, seeing anti-LGBTQ+ trolls spamming IMDb with negative reviews without having seen the film is not surprising. With that in mind, it’s understandable why Kumail Nanjiani believes that the film is “upsetting” the right people in this regard. Again, legitimate criticism with the merits of the film’s quality is fine, but judging it based on the inclusion of an LGBTQ+ character; especially if one hasn’t even seen the film is ridiculous.

“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
