Hawkeye artist David Aja has reacted to the poster for Marvel-based Disney Plus series.
The next Marvel Cinematic Universe series set hit Disney Plus is Hawkeye, which sees Clint Barton being whisked away on a Christmastime adventure in the Big Apple with Kate Bishop. Set to debut later next month, the first few looks we’ve had at the series have been increasingly positive. It’s clear that the Disney Plus series is taking a decent amount of inspiration from Matt Fraction and David Aja’s Hawkeye run – one of the most revered that the character has ever had.
Earlier this week, Disney Plus released a brand new poster for the series, which directly pays homage to one of Aja’s covers.
A common conversation taking place online in the wake of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (and comic book films in general) success is how the comic writers and artists do not get compensated for the live-action works based on their projects. Instead, artists and writers are often thanked in the credits, which is a far cry from being financially compensated.
The conversation began to flourish once again after the Hawkeye poster went viral, with David Aja stepping in to say he would much rather be compensated for his work than get credited.
The Hawkeye artist’s comments are clearly not meant to be taken uber seriously, but Aja’s frustration is one that is common in the comic community. Artists and writers have been getting the short end of the stick when it comes to major releases like those in the MCU. Most MCU films end up grossing well over $400 million, with some even breaking the bank with over a billion in gross. It’s shameful that artists and writers only get credit when Marvel is walking away with enough funds larger than a small country’s GDP.

Hawkeye stars Jeremy Renner, Hailee Steinfeld, Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Brian d’Arcy James, and Alaqua Cox. Florence Pugh is expected to return in her Black Widow role.
