The “A-Force” scene from Avengers: Endgame was re-shot after test audiences found it to be “pandering”.
The recently released The Story Of Marvel Studios book breaks down the storied rise of Marvel Studios over the last decade. The book, approved by Marvel Studios, gives fans a great behind-the-scenes look at all of the studio’s productions, including details that many might not know. The most recent revelation from the book is that the “A-Force” scene from Avengers: Endgame was re-shot after it was criticized by test audiences for being too “pandering”.
In the final battle against Thanos, a variety of female heroes from all points of the MCU joined together in combat, a moment that many have dubbed the “A-Force” scene. The scene was criticized by some at the time of its release for being too obvious and on-the-nose when it came to female empowerment, while others praised it for shaking things up in a 3-hour long film that was similarly dominated by men.
Avengers: Endgame producer Trinh Tran revealed that they had to reshoot the scene after it was maligned by test audiences.
“When we started screen-testing it, there was a little concern for ‘Does it come off [as]pandering?’ Are we going to get people saying, ‘Oh you’re just putting that scene in there just to put the scene in there. Does it actually have a story to tell with the rest of the narrative?’ That was always a concern in the back of our heads.”
Tran wanted to keep the sequence in the film so the studio re-shot it to feature scenes of the same female heroes in smaller groups to make it flow more naturally. It’s up to debate if the scene worked or not, but it’s great that the producers at Marvel Studios had to foresight to predict such a response from its loyal fanbase.
Here is the official plot synopsis for the Marvel Studios film:
