Kevin Feige explained why he’s still excited for the MCU despite the franchise crossing the decade mark.
The first film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was Iron Man, which came out a whopping 13 years ago. Since then, the franchise, heralded by megaproducer Kevin Feige, has become the biggest in the world. While some may feel franchise fatigue, Marvel Studios is showing no signs of stopping its consistent output anytime soon and a key part od that is Feige’s dedication and love for the franchise.
The recently released The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is considered by Marvel Studios as the definitive behind-the-scenes companion guide for the franchise. The book, penned by Tara Bennett and Paul Terry, is filled with stories and anecdotes that detail the rise of the MCU. It even features interviews with key creatives, including Kevin Feige, who says that he’s excited to work on the franchise because he’s a fan first.
One way Kevin Feige expresses his excitement over the characters he has come to shape is through merchandise. Feige explained to the authors how important purchasing merchandise is for fans and how it helps create excitement.
“I love buying merchandise, [but] the only reason you would want to do that is if the show or the movie was so powerful and you connected with it so much that you wanted to expand the experience… and every time we’ve followed our instincts, the audience has come with us. Also, it’s a testament to the eighty years of publishing, and to the way the characters have grown and evolved that Stan [Lee] and Jack [Kirby] and Steve [Ditko] and everybody created and even conceived in a way to allow them to grow, change, and evolve.”
There are dozens of projects in the works for the MCU. The franchise is currently dominating Disney Plus, where a number of original shows have been released, including WandaVision, Loki, and What If…?. The next film coming from Marvel Studios is Eternals, which is directed by Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao.
Here is the synopsis for Chloe Zhao’s Eternals:
“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
Eternals will hit theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
