Green Lantern showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith recently provided an update on the upcoming HBO Max series.
Over the weekend, we got news and reveals for a bunch of upcoming DC projects during FanDome. However, one project that was noticeably absent was HBO Max’s Green Lantern series. While speaking with Collider, showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith offered an update on the series:
“Yeah, that show is gigantic. It has taken quite a bit of time to get to this point and it’s just a big, big undertaking. It’s going really well. All I can say is that it’s going really well and there are gonna be Green Lanterns in it, and it’s gonna be on HBO Max.”
At one point, Seth Grahame-Smith was also attached to direct Ezra Miller’s The Flash and during the interview, he opened up about his history with DC Comics as well:
“I’ll admit, I wasn’t like a huge comic book kid. I was a huge movie kid. And so, my introduction to DC Comics came through the ‘89 Batman movie. When that movie came out, I was like, “Oh, my God, Batman is the coolest,” and I started reading Batman comic books. But Green Lantern is something that, to be honest with you, just came to me later, by way of just talking about doing the show. The possibility of doing the show led me down a deep dive of Green Lantern lore. We’ll see. It’s gonna be awhile before the world gets to see that, but we are very, very busy at work, as we speak.”
Here is the official logline for the series:
From DC and HBO Max and Berlanti Productions comes a bold adaptation of the iconic comic book franchise: A saga spanning decades and galaxies. GREEN LANTERN will depict the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott—Earth’s first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man—and many more. The series will also include fan favorites such as Sinestro and Killowog, as well as introduce new heroes to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps.
In addition to a Green Lantern series, HBO Max is also developing a Strange Adventures DC anthology series, a DC Super Hero High show from Elizabeth Banks, James Gunn’s Peacekeeper spin-off, and Matt Reeves’ Gotham PD series set in the world of The Batman.
News of the Green Lantern series arrived shortly after reports of HBO Max planning to produce DC projects with budgets on par with those of feature films.
