Netflix has released a brand new trailer for Cowboy Bepop that shows John Cho’s Spike in action.
If there was doubt that Netflix’s adaptation of Cowboy Bepop would be sacrilegious, think again. The streaming service debuted a brand new teaser trailer for the sci-fi epic, giving fans their first solid look at the show’s tone and style. Right from the get-go, it’s clear that the adaptation isn’t going the Gus Van Sant Psycho route and doing a scene-by-scene remake. Nor does it feel like the generic American adaptation that neuters the original’s soul.
Instead, the John Cho-led series looks to be clearly playing around with the anime’s tropes and stylistic choices by wearing them on its sleeve. The teaser shows the live-action series is making use of the anime’s iconic transitions in a fun, immersive way that sets it apart from other live-action adaptations that are normally just paid straight.
Fans have commented on how the John Cho series looks as if it was also influenced by Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which made similar stylistic choices to reflect its comic origins. Beyond the adaptations style, it’s great to see John Cho effortlessly land into the role of Spike, a bounty hunter with a penchant for violence and cigarettes.
Here is the synopsis for Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop:
“The series focuses on the adventures of a ragtag group of bounty hunters chasing down criminals across the solar system.”
Cowboy Bepop is written by Christoper Yost and stars John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, Daniella Pineda, Alex Hassell, Elena Satine, and Rachel House. The series debuts on November 19.
