Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explained why a bevy of Phase 4 films were recently delayed.
Last night was the premiere for Eternals, Marvel Studios’ latest project. Just hours before the film’s debut, Disney announced a series of delays in its upcoming slate, which mostly consisted of Marvel films. It was unclear at the time why Disney delayed some of Marvel’s most high-profile films by months, including Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
At the Eternals premiere, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked by Variety why a major chunk of Phase 4 was delayed. Feige put fan anxieties to rest and explained how Marvel has so many slots, which allows them to interchange films.
“It’s production shifts and changes, and because we have so many slots, we can just shift slots. So all of the Marvel movie slots are the same, we are just shifting which movies are coming out. Strange has moved six weeks, so instead of being three months between Marvel movies, there will be five months. And I think we can all handle that.”
While the changes for most films, like the Doctor Strange sequel, aren’t all that monumental, Feige didn’t give fans a straight response as to why almost every Phase 4 film was delayed. The likely culprit here is COVID-19, which has significantly affected the film industry. Marvel Studios films require generous amounts of touch-ups in post-production and with most teams working from home, it was likely difficult to meet previous deadlines.
Here is the synopsis for Marvel Studios’ latest film, Eternals:
“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
