‘Eternals’: First Reactions Praise Chloe Zhao’s Marvel Debut

The first reactions to Chloe Zhao’s Eternals trickled out after the Marvel film premiered in Los Angeles.

After a series of delays, Marvel Studios’ Eternals finally debuted last night, making it the third film from the studio to release this year. Directed by Oscar-winner Chloe Zhao, the film focuses on the titular immortal race of cosmic beings who have treated Earth as their home for over 7,000 years. Sent here to protect us, humans, from Deviants, the Eternals eventually amalgamated into our societies. The film takes place in both the present and the past, giving audiences a unique spin on the Marvel Cinematic Universe landscape.

First reactions from critics have praised the film for its unique approach to the Marvel template, as well as Chloe Zhao’s visuals and action setpieces. Many have even gone so far as to say that it is a masterpiece for Marvel Studios.

Marvel’s #Eternals is spectacularly weird & rich w/ a new MCU mythology that makes it feel separate from everything else. It’s honestly refreshing. There’s a bittersweetness to the film that you feel in its sunset shots – a definite Chloé Zhao touch. It is soulful & thoughtful pic.twitter.com/pIAFAyhJ4D

#Eternals is a whole lot of movie.

It’s shot with a massive scope, looking visually different (and more intimate) than anything else Marvel. It has laughs, great surprises, and heart to go with the gigantic, crowded story it unpacks.

Chloé Zhao has a really unique visual stamp. pic.twitter.com/hSMtwRlabv

Eternals is Marvel’s version of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. A film that builds upon a cast of unknown characters and does so with great success. Chloé Zhao direction is superb. Easily one of the best looking Marvel films of all time. Insane post credits scenes too. #Eternals pic.twitter.com/TbZlqPJxGQ

#Eternals is amazing! Chloé Zhao & company turn in an evocative, emotional, extraordinarily epic superhero film. The ensemble have great chemistry & all get big Movie Moments to showcase their prowess. The naturalism of Ben Davis’ cinematography spotlights characters’ humanity. pic.twitter.com/MjZ2VheJ56

#Eternals breaks new ground for the MCU and not in all the ways you’re expecting. Alternating between beautiful and baffling, epic and intimate, it’s a movie of huge ideas, where the sentiment often matters more than anything going on in the story. I can’t wait to see it again.? pic.twitter.com/KE6oHlU8xI

#Eternals is one of Marvel’s most ambitious films. Epic in scope, lavishly shot, and totally unapologetic about how much lore it dumps on you.

Terrific cast, great direction, and delightfully comic book-y. Def not for everyone, but these are Jack Kirby’s space gods done right. pic.twitter.com/fsuexvcTwY

It’s clear from first reactions that Chloe Zhao’s direction is out of this world, with many praising her sense of scope and focus on intimate storytelling. The cast has also been heavily praised, along with the action sequences. The wait for Eternals is still lengthy, as the film doesn’t release until early November, but at least audiences have positive early tweets to tide them over until its release.

Here is the synopsis for Eternals:

“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”

Chloe Zhao directed Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak, and Angelina Jolie as Thena.

Eternals will hit theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming MCU film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
