Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo has addressed recent reports on a potential return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Back in 2019, Anthony and Joe Russo oversaw the release of Avengers: Endgame which went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time. James Cameron’s Avatar would eventually beat the film out following a brief re-release but it was a title the movie held for a brief moment. Afterward, the directors decided to take a break from Marvel, directing the Tom Holland film, Cherry, and produced a number of other films including 21 Bridges starring the late Chadwick Boseman and the Chris Hemsworth Netflix film, Extraction. A return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, may not be too far off.
In the wake of Scarlett Johanson’s lawsuit against Disney, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Avengers directors were in negotiations to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a creative capacity. The lawsuit reportedly put the negotiations on hold as the actress and company sorted out their differences. Now Joe Russo has finally addressed this report.
While speaking to Variety, Joe Russo was asked about the status of a potential return to Marvel. The Avengers director declined to respond stating that “it would be inappropriate for us to comment on a deal if we were in the middle of it.” He was, however, relieved that the lawsuit had been settled:
“I’m glad that the lawsuit’s resolved. I do think it was indicative of significant change that’s been happening. The resolution speaks volumes about the respect for artists moving forward in this changing landscape.”
Here is the synopsis for Joe Russo’s latest Marvel film, Avengers: Endgame:
The grave course of events set in motion by Thanos that wiped out half the universe and fractured the Avengers ranks compels the remaining Avengers to take one final stand in Marvel Studios’ grand conclusion to twenty-two films, “Avengers: Endgame.”
