Tom Holland has cased doubt on his future as everyone’s favorite web-slinger after Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The history of Tom Holland’s career as Spider-Man is truly a bizarre one. Holland was the third actor to portray the character in a 15-year window and marked the third time the studios had rebooted the character. The big selling point for the character this time around was that he would be included in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige overseeing the production of the new films.
Since their release, both of Tom Holland’s films, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home have been well received by fans and critics with the latter becoming the highest-grossing Spider-Man film of all time. The actor also appeared as the character three additional times in Captain America: Civil War where he made his debut, and Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame where he fought alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against Thanos. But now, it could all possibly be coming to an end.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly where a new set of stills were revealed, Tom Holland opened up about playing the character and opened up about the final scene they shot and how it could have been the last day any of them would ever work together:
“We’ve done every single film, every single press tour. So this one scene, [we didn’t know] if this would be the last time [we were all working together.] [It] was heartbreaking but also really exciting because we’re all moving into the next chapter of our careers. So sharing that moment with them was maybe the best day I’ve ever had on set. I don’t think I’ve cried like that ever.”
In that same interview, Tom Holland noted that the film was very much being treated as the end of the franchise they started several years ago and seemed unsure if the cast would ever play the same characters again:
“We were all treating [No Way Home] as the end of a franchise, let’s say. I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you’d be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the Homecoming trilogy. We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. But we were definitely treating [No Way Home] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it.”
