Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame co-director Joe Russo has weighed on Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow lawsuit and its resolution.
Earlier this year, Scarlett Johansson shocked the movie world by launching a lawsuit against Disney over the way the company released Black Widow. According to the actress and her legal team, Disney breached its contract with the Black Widow star by releasing the film on Disney Plus while it was in theaters. Since then several people in the industry have come out in support of Scarlett Johansson and even the Avengers: Endgame directors have admitted that the lawsuit has made them rethink their future with Disney and Marvel.
Late last month, an agreement was reached between Disney and Scarlett Johanson in an amount that was upwards of $40M. In a recent interview with Variety, Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo weighed in on the settlement. Russo had worked with the Black Widow star in four different films and while he didn’t have anything to say about the actress he did give us an idea of how things are moving within the industry:
“I’m glad that the lawsuit’s resolved. I do think it was indicative of significant change that’s been happening. The resolution speaks volumes about the respect for artists moving forward in this changing landscape.
Corporations are panicking at the moment, because I think that half the studios are going to disappear in the next 5-10 years, and the game has changed dramatically. There are content producers who can outspend any studio, and it’s just a rounding error for them, because they’re $1 trillion companies. We’ve never seen that before in the business.”
