Eternals producer Nate Moore discussed a key but tragic detail about Angelina Jolie’s powerful Thena.
The Eternals are a race of immortal cosmic beings who were sent to Earth 7,000 years ago to protect us from their nefarious counterparts: the Deviants. One of the core components of Chloe Zhao’s upcoming sci-fi epic and Marvel debut is how time fractures the Eternals. The film is set throughout the past 70 centuries, showing the team of heroes living and working with early civilizations. However, living for so long, and absorbing so many memories comes at a cost.
When ScreenRant visited the set of Eternals back in 2020, producer Nate Moore touched upon Angelina Jolie’s Thena, who suffers from a form of dementia that is unique to the cosmic being.
“She has a tragic story in our film in that she comes down with something called Mahd Wy’ry. If you guys are fans of comics Mahd Wy’ry is something that can beset an Eternal. It’s a version of dementia. Because of the amount of memories they have, they become unstuck in their own mind, so she starts to forget exactly when she is, so through the course of the movie, Gilgamesh becomes her protector. And when we find them in the modern day, they’re living off the grid in a cabin in Australia because she’s too dangerous to have around humans, so it’s a fun arc for Angelina to play.”
The film is set both in the past and present, spotlighting how the Eternals have evolved and fractured over time. It will be interesting to see how Angelina Jolie tackles such a damning fate, and how it informs the film as a whole. Thena is one of the most powerful Eternals, and Gilgamesh practically rivals her, so it’s safe to say the heroine is in safe hands if her memory gets wonky during battle. The latest trailer teased how the Eternals “broke up” decades ago and haven’t reunited until new threat dawns and disrupts Earth, forcing them to intervene. It remains to be seen if other Eternals suffer the same fate as Thena.
Here is the synopsis for Eternals:
“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directs Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
Eternals will hit theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the upcoming Marvel film and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
