The first look at Timothee Chalamet as Willy Wonka practically broke the internet.
Earlier this year it was announced that Paddington director and writer Paul King would be helming a Willy Wonka origin story, with Dune star Timothee Chalamet set to play the young, inventive chocolatier. The project was originally in development back in 2018 but with Chalamet on board, production quickly began to move along. Shortly afterwards, Keegan-Michael Key, Rowen Atkinson, Olivia Coleman and Sally Hawkins were brought on board to round out the film’s supporting cast. It’s unclear just how far back the film will go, and if it will explore Willy Wonka’s childhood or merely his rise as the world’s most popular candymaker.
Production is further along than expected as Timothee Chalamet sent the internet into a frenzy when he revealed the first look at himself as Willy Wonka.
Shortly after the Call Me By Your Name star dropped the first look at himself in the top hat and red velvet coat, users on Twitter either praised his look or trolled it endlessly, calling out how ridiculous an origin story sounds.
The consensus on Timothee Chalamet as Willy Wonka seems to be right down the middle. While some are praising the faithful look and are looking forward to seeing how the deranged man went on to become the number one concessions manufacturer, many are confused as to why Wonka is even happening. It certainly is an odd character to adapt and give an origin story to considering the allure of Willy Wonka’s mania is not knowing how he became too big to fail.
A case can be made for director and writer Paul King, who scored two home runs with his Paddington series. While Wonka most likely won’t be a “dark and gritty” reboot of the character, it will be interesting to see how King informs Timothee Chalamet’s performance as the famed inventor and chocolate purveyor.
Details on the origin story are slim, though we do know that writer/director Paul King has tapped Timothee Chalamet as Willy Wonka, with Keegan-Michael Key, Rowen Atkinson, Olvia Coleman, Sally Hawkins, Jim Carter, and Rich Fulcher in undisclosed roles.
Wonka is set to hit cinemas on March 17, 2023. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the upcoming film, and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
