Chloe Zhao’s Eternals is set to be one of the longest MCU films ever made.
It looks like the wait for Eternals will be worth it as it’s set to be the second-longest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers: Endgame. The last Avengers film clocked in at just over three hours and used its time extremely wisely, tying up the decade-long franchise. Chloe Zhao’s MCU debut clocks in at 2 hours and 30 minutes, a half-hour less than Endgame.
In an interview with Fandango, director Chloe Zhao discussed how the length of the film is intentional and how it feeds into the story she crafted.
“It could be longer! You know, it’s ten characters, the Celestials and 7,000 years. There’s a lot going on.”
Zhao also revealed that the home media release for the film will feature deleted scenes.
“You get to see some, yes.”
If there ever was an MCU film to warrant such a lengthy runtime, it’s Eternals. As Zhao stated, the film is set to chronicle the immortal cosmic beings throughout 70 centuries, so it’s only fair that we’re given a solid glimpse at them. The film’s promotional footage has done an excellent job of teasing the Eternals throughout the centuries as they join in on some of Earth’s oldest, most primitive civilizations.
Here is the synopsis for Eternals:
“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directs Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
