Jake Gyllenhaal Says Tom Holland Helped Him With Anxiety On The Set Of ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’

Jake Gyllenhaal has revealed that he had anxiety issues on the set of Spider-Man: No Way Home and that Tom Holland helped him through them.

Back in 2019, the first Marvel Cinematic Universe followup to Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home was released. Like its predecessor, it was critically well-received and went on to earn over $1B worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in the Spider-Man franchise. One of the biggest praises of the film was how the film worked its main antagonist, Mysterio.

In the comics, Mysterio was a disgraced special effects technician who used his skills to commit crimes. In Spider-Man: Far From Home, Jake Gyllenhaal’s version of the character is revealed to be the head of a team of scientists who were disgraced by Tony Stark and used powerful holographic technology to execute their plans. The actor himself, however, recently revealed that playing the role in the MCU wasn’t exactly an easy thing for him.

In a recent interview on The Howard Stern Show, the actor talked about the pressure he felt starring in the Spider-Man film and how he choked up working alongside people like Samuel L. Jackson and credited Tom Holland for helping him snap out of it:

“I was freaking out. It was a scene with [Samuel L.] Jackson, Tom … there were a number of actors in that scene. And I remember not being able to remember my lines. I was the wooden board. And they were like, ‘Whoa.’ And I went up to Tom Holland and was like, ‘Dude, help me out.’ He’s like, ‘It’s all good, man. Just relax.’ It was like he was me in so many situations. And I finally did. I just put a lot of pressure on [myself] because I love that world.”

Here is the synopsis for the latest film in the franchise, Spider-Man: No Way Home:

“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.”

Directed by Jon Watts from a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: No Way Home stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Favreau, Jacob Batalon, Marisa Tomei, J.B. Smoove, Benedict Wong, Alfred Molina, Jamie Foxx, Tony Revolori and J.K. Simmons.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently set to be released on December 17, 2021. Stay tuned for all the latest news surrounding the franchise and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
