The season finale of Marvel Studios’ What If…? features the series’ first post-credits sequence.
Major spoilers ahead for What If…?
After a reality-breaking penultimate episode that saw Ultron taking over The Watcher’s role, What If…?‘s season finale upped the ante in the most Marvel way possible. Realizing that he can’t defeat Ultron’s reign over the multiverse, The Watcher broke his cardinal rule of no interference and united the Guardians of the Multiverse to defeat the Tony Stark-created A.I. Once Ultron was wiped off the face of the multiverse, The Watcher sent every character back to their respective reality, including everyone’s favorite Captain Carter, who is set to return in season two.
The season finale of What If…? didn’t just end with the promise of more Captain Carter but featured a post-credits sequence – a first for the series – that teases a happy ending for the character. At the end of the episode, Captain Carter gets sent back to her reality, which saw her going through the opening mission from Captain America: The Winter Soldier with Black Widow.
In the post-credits scene, Black Widow points out a HYDRA container that the organization was keen on protecting. Inside lies a HYDRA Stomper which has kept Steve Rogers alive through being doused in ice. The episode suggests that HYDRA seek to weaponize Rogers, similarly to how they took over Bucky Rogers’ mind, but the sequence does imply that Captain Carter and her beau will have a happy ending after all.
