The rumored October 2022 release date for Mahershala Ali’s Blade appears to have been debunked.
In a now-deleted tweet, the Marvel Studios India Twitter account teased that Marhershala Ali’s Blade would hit cinemas on October 7, 2022. While many expressed excitement at the sooner than expected release date, some industry pundits were left scratching their heads as the film isn’t expected to begin filming until next year. Furthermore, all of the films set to release in 2022 from Marvel Studios have either wrapped filming or in the case of The Marvels are in the middle of it. Ali’s Blade hasn’t even filmed a single shot yet, making the October 7 release date dubious.
An earlier report suggested that the film wouldn’t start production until 2022. Justin Kroll of Deadline took to Twitter to point out how the October 7 release date is quite unlikely given that the film doesn’t begin shooting until Summer 2022, corroborating the earlier report.
If the film were to begin shooting in the Summer of 2022 and be released in October, that would probably be the quickest turnaround time for a major blockbuster! By the looks of it, Marhershala Ali’s debut as Blade likely won’t hit cinemas until 2023 at the earliest, meaning Marvel fans have quite a while to wait before they see the world’s greatest vampire slayer.
Full details on Mahershala Ali’s Blade are currently unknown, though Kevin Feige confirmed the reboot will be part of Marvel Studios’ Phase 5. The project is said to have come about after Mahershala Ali called Marvel expressing his interest in Blade following his Academy Award win for his performance in Green Book.
In Marvel Comics, Blade is also known as Eric Brooks, the half-human and half-vampire master martial artist whose mother was killed by a vampire during his birth. Since then, Blade has mastered his own fighting style to take on various types of monsters and rid the world of vampires. Wesley Snipes first portrayed the eponymous hero in 1998’s Blade and returned for the first sequel directed by Guillermo del Toro before making what is now his final appearance as the character in Blade Trinity.
