Marvel Studios’ upcoming film Eternals is set to premiere at the Rome Film Festival.
After a series of delays and an uncertain release, Marvel Studios’ Eternals is finally releasing this year. Directed by Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao, Eternals is set to showcase the immortal race inhabiting Earth for thousands of years as they fight off the Deviants that plague our planet. Set in both the past and the present, Eternals is expected to be the most expansive film Marvel Studios has ever produced, making it one of their most unique projects.
The film is not only unique in its presentation but also in its release. Variety reports that Marvel Studios’ latest will be closing out the Rome Film Festival on Sunday, October 24. This will be the first time a Marvel Studios project has appeared at a film festival. The festival is set to begin on October 14.
In recent years, film festivals across the world have begun to embrace the comic book medium. Todd Phillips’ Joker famously debuted at the 2019 Venice Film Festival and even managed to nab the prestigious Golden Lion, the festival’s highest award. In a coincidence, Chloe Zhao’s previous directorial effort Nomadland won the same award when it appeared at the 2020 edition of the festival.
Here is the synopsis for Eternals:
“Following the events of ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ an unexpected tragedy forces the Eternals out of the shadows to reunite against mankind’s most ancient enemy, The Deviants. The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”
Chloe Zhao directs Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo, and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
