‘The Suicide Squad’ Director James Gunn Working On A New DCEU Project

The Suicide Squad writer and director James Gunn has revealed that he has another project besides Peacemaker in the works for the DCEU.

The brass behind the DC Extended Universe famously poached James Gunn from Marvel after he was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 after questionable tweets of his surfaced. Gunn went on to make this year’s The Suicide Squad, which critics and audiences have considered to be one of the best superhero films in recent memory. Leading up to The Suicide Squad‘s post-production, Marvel reinstated Gunn as the director and scribe for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, once again solidifying his relationship with the world’s biggest studio.

It would be easy to imagine that James Gunn’s relationship with the DCEU was more of a convenience, seeing as he didn’t have a gig lined up at Marvel at the time. However, Gunn took to Twitter to reveal that he has another project in the works with the company besides Peacemaker, his spin-off series to The Suicide Squad.

Yes, I’m developing another DC project besides Peacemaker.

After the Peacemaker series debuts in January, James Gunn will be hard at work on the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Vol. 3, which are supposed to release in 2022 and 2023, respectively. It’s uncertain if Gunn will helm a new property for the DCEU or continue working with his batch of The Suicide Squad characters. The director previously expressed interest in helming a Justice League vs. The Suicide Squad film, which is definitely up his wheelhouse.

Here is the synopsis for The Suicide Squad:

Welcome to hell—a.k.a. Belle Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out—even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin and everyone’s favorite psycho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese. Trekking through a jungle teeming with militant adversaries and guerrilla forces at every turn, the Squad is on a search-and-destroy mission, with only Colonel Rick Flag on the ground to make them behave…and Amanda Waller’s government techies in their ears, tracking their every movement. And as always, one wrong move and they’re dead (whether at the hands of their opponents, a teammate, or Waller herself). If anyone’s laying down bets, the smart money is against them—all of them.

Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Sylvester Stallone, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Michael Rooker, Pete Davidson, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Flula Borg, Mayling Ng, Tinashe Kajese, Steve Agee, Jennifer Holland, Alice Braga, Juan Diego Botto, Joaquin Cosio, Storm Reid and Taika Waititi.

The Suicide Squad is out now in theatres. Stay tuned for all the latest news on the Peacemaker series, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content!
