‘Eternals’: Marvel Studios Confirms Timelines The Narrative Takes Place

Marvel Studios has confirmed the timelines in which Eternals takes place.

Eternals is the newest film set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and after a year-long delay given the COVID-19 pandemic, fans will finally be introduced to one of the most unique groups of characters that Marvel Studios has ever brought to the screen. The film, which was directed by Academy Award-winner Chloe Zhao will explore some uncharted territory within the MCU.

Given that the titular Eternals have been around long before the origins of the established MCU, there is a vast history for the characters that will be explored in the film. An updated synopsis released by Marvel Studios via a press release gives fans a sense at the film’s narrative timeline, which takes place over two different time periods.

You can read Marvel Studios’ official new synopsis for Eternals down below:

“The story takes place across two time periods. One storyline is set in the past when they operated as a formidable team and a close family unit. The second storyline is in the present, when the group has fractured and split apart, content to live among humans, hiding in plain sight. The prevailing threat of the Deviants, which once again threatens the existence of mankind, means the Eternals need to put their differences aside and regroup.”

The trailers have given us a glimpse at moments from both time periods, exploring the character dynamics from the past timeline compared to the present. One giveaway is the moment in the first teaser in which Sprite (Lia McHugh) questions the group about who would lead the Avengers with Steve Rogers gone, to which Ikaris (Richard Madden) playfully replies that he could lead them.

With just over a month away from its release, Marvel Studios’ Eternals is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing new entries in the MCU, further expanding the possibilities of a post-Endgame franchise. It will be exciting to see what sensibilities Chloe Zhao brings to the table here.

Chloe Zhao directs Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak and Angelina Jolie as Thena.

Eternals is set to hit theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
