Eternals director Chloe Zhao gave an intriguing answer on possibly directing a Star Wars film.
Academy Award-winning filmmaker Chloe Zhao is one of the most exciting directors to helm a Marvel Cinematic Universe film. Her sensibilities as a storyteller will certainly bring a unique perspective to Eternals, and it appears that she is also open to bringing her skills to yet another iconic franchise: Star Wars.
While promoting Eternals with Empire, Chloe Zhao was asked about taking part in the Star Wars universe, which she has expressed in the past that she’s a big fan of the franchise. She had quite an interesting response:
“Hmmmm. I have to tread very carefully with what I say here. [laughs] Yes. Let’s just say, it’s a world I have so much reverence for because it was such an important part of my life.”
It is interesting to hear Chloe Zhao’s comments here. For the time being, it appears that the Star Wars franchise is shifting their focus away from the big screen productions to the small screen ones. Following five straight years of a new Star Wars film at the theater, particularly after the polarizing reception of the Sequel Trilogy, the franchise is bringing more shows like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi to life. That isn’t to say that films aren’t still being developed, with Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron and Taika Waititi’s untitled film both in the works.
Chloe Zhao would be yet another exciting filmmaker for Star Wars. Based on what we have seen from Eternals so far as well as her stunning work on Nomadland, she would bring a sense of humanity that is rarely seen in any blockbuster film. Just imagine those character-driven sensibilities applied to a galaxy far, far away.
Here is the synopsis for Chloe Zhao’s Eternals:
“When monstrous creatures called the Deviants, long thought lost to history, mysteriously return, the Eternals are forced to reunite in order to defend humanity once again.”
Chloe Zhao directs Eternals from a script she co-wrote with Patrick Burleigh, Kaz Firpo and Ryan Firpo. The cast of the Marvel Studios project includes Gemma Chan as Sersi, Richard Madden as Ikaris, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Barry Keoghan as Druig, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, Salma Hayek as Ajak and Angelina Jolie as Thena.
Eternals is set to hit theaters on November 5, 2021. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the Star Wars Universe, and subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
