The early box office numbers for Tom Hardy’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage are extremely promising!
Venom: Let There Be Carnage has finally unleashed itself upon the world and it looks like audiences are showing up in droves to support the symbiote’s second adventure. The first film in the franchise was a commercial success, grossing a whopping $850 million at the global box office. And while it’s unlikely that Venom: Let There Be Carnage will gross as much due to the pandemic still ravaging parts of the world, early numbers for the sequel are quite promising.
Exhibitor Relations reports that Venom: Let There Be Carnage racked up an insane $11.6 million during its Thursday night previews. Sony’s projections for the long-awaited sequel are the high $50 million. The box office authority suggests the studio’s projections are conservative.
Sony initially predicted a $40 million showing at the opening weekend so it’s fantastic to see their number go higher.
The first Venom racked up $10 million during its Thursday night showings. While there’s only a $1 million and some change difference between the two films, it should be noted that Let There Be Carnage is opening up while numerous theatres across the world adhere to social distancing rules which limit the number of seats able to be sold. Venom‘s opening weekend cume was $80 million, which could potentially be reached, if not surpassed this weekend by the sequel. Those who are skeptical of the sequel will likely show up as well once they hear how insane the mid-credits sequence is.
Here is the synopsis for Sony’s first Venom film:
“The evolution story of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass character – Venom! Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is a broken man after he loses everything including his job and fiancée. Just when his life is at its lowest, he becomes host to an alien symbiote which results in extraordinary superpowers – transforming him into Venom. Will these powers be enough for this new lethal protector to defeat great evil forces, especially against the far stronger and more weaponized symbiote rival, Riot?”
Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a script written by Jeff Pinkner & Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate, Ron Cephas Jones, and Woody Harrelson.
Venom is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD, while Andy Serkis’ Let There Be Carnage is out now in cinemas.
