Venom co-writer Kelly Marcel revealed that the first day of the iconic Lobster from the first film was “utter chaos”.
After a series of delays, Venom: Let There Be Carnage has finally unleashed itself upon cinemagoers! Now that the sequel is out and has doubled down on the chaos of the first film, it’s interesting to look back at the original Venom and see just how insane it was. The film bewildered audiences and critics with its creative choices that set it apart from the flock of Marvel Cinematic Universe films. One scene in particular that set the tone for the franchise was the already iconic lobster scene.
The scene saw a deranged Venom adapting to Eddie Brock’s body and in search of food. At a restaurant, a ravenous Eddie dives into a lobster tank to cool himself off from the Venom sweats and devours a live lobster. It turns out that the brilliant and hilarious scene was a last-minute inclusion by Tom Hardy and co-writer Kelly Marcel.
In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, the Venom co-writer opened up about how the moments leading up to the lobster scene were just as chaotic as the events depicted on screen.
“The lobster day was utter, utter chaos. You’ll find four or five of those in this movie. The movie clings to that feeling of joy and fun and madness.”
Tom Hardy then chimed in and mentioned how they had little time on the floor to do the lobster scene so they took full advantage of the time they had.
“The lobster tank conversation was prior to us even getting on the floor filming this time. We maxed out on as many opportunities to enjoy the set and the sandbox that was laid down as a team.”
Just like co-writer Kelly Marcel mentioned, Venom: Let There Be Carnage features about half a dozen moments that rival the hilarious lobster scene. While we weren’t the biggest fans of the sequel, we can admire just how insane the second go at the character is.
Here is the synopsis for Sony’s first Venom film:
“The evolution story of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass character – Venom! Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is a broken man after he loses everything including his job and fiancée. Just when his life is at its lowest, he becomes host to an alien symbiote which results in extraordinary superpowers – transforming him into Venom. Will these powers be enough for this new lethal protector to defeat great evil forces, especially against the far stronger and more weaponized symbiote rival, Riot?”
Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a script written by Jeff Pinkner & Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate, Ron Cephas Jones, and Woody Harrelson.
Venom is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD, while Andy Serkis’ Let There Be Carnage is out now in cinemas.
