Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton broke down how Marvel Studios helped shape the film’s two Avengers cameos.

It’s now been just about a month since Marvel Studios debut Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, a film that broke North American pandemic records. The film was praised for its solid action sequences, captivating and nuanced family-driven story, as well as lead performances. The film also featured numerous cameos from previous Marvel entries like Doctor Strange’s Wong and The Incredible Hulk’s Abomination.
The post-credits scene also featured two iconic Avengers ushering Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and Awkwafina’s Katy into the team. Both Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk and Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel appeared in the post-credits scene, discussing the origins of the Ten Rings and how they’re emitting a signal. The cameos were highly praised and once again cemented just how inter-connected the franchise is.
In an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment, director Destin Daniel Cretton revealed that Marvel Studios made numerous changes to the cameos in the film, confirming that Mark Ruffalo and Brie Larson’s Avengers weren’t the first choices.
“You would think that more things came straight down from the top, but that never was [ordered down]. We were begging sometimes to like, ‘Just tell us [who can be in the scene]. But it took a lot of us throwing out options, like, ‘How about this, how about this, how about this?’ And I think because the [Marvel Cinematic Universe] is such a living organism…you know, there’s writer’s rooms happening, developing things simultaneously all the time. Everything does need to fit.”
The director continued by discussing how he and the screenwriters would offer ideas to Marvel Studios and occasionally get a “maybe”.
“And that meant, ‘Okay, something else is developing somewhere else, but we’re not totally sure if that character will make sense.’ Sometimes that ‘maybe’ would hang for a bit, and then they’d [Marvel Studios] say, ‘Oh, no, we can’t do that person anymore.’ We did that, I don’t know [how many times].”
In the end, the cameos eventually went to the Hulk and Captain Marvel because they made sense during the time period the film was set in, which was directly after Avengers: Endgame.
“We went through so many iterations who could be in that room. We knew that we wanted characters to be helping us usher Shang-Chi into the bigger universe. But those characters that we landed on made sense to all of the other things that are happening in the MCU at the time that we actually shot it.”

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script written by David Callaham, the upcoming Marvel film stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung.
