Marvel Entertainment’s Bill Rosemann has compared Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
Insomniac Games blew fans away earlier this month when they revealed that they were working on a sequel to Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The sequel, which will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5, will focus on the two Spider-Men facing a great threat, which includes Venom. The brief teaser released at the PlayStation showcase was bone-chilling and definitely had some dark, horror elements to it, particularly when Venom was revealed.
While details on the sequel are slim, it’s clear that the second entry in the mainline Spider-Man gaming franchise will be darker than the previous game. One of the top brass at Marvel even compared the upcoming PlayStation exclusive to Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, the quintessential dark sequel.
Marvel Entertainment’s Bill Rosemann made the comparison whilst on the This Week In Marvel podcast, where he briefly discussed the sequel.
“If the first Spider-Man game was Star Wars, Spider-Man 2 is kind of our Empire. It gets a little darker.”
While Bill Rosemann’s comments aren’t explicit enough to reveal new details, it does give us some indication as to where the hit franchise is going. The first Spider-Man game and Miles Morales ended on somber but ultimately uplifting notes, so it makes sense that the second game in the mainline franchise would want to double down on the darkness of the first two entries. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back was notably darker than A New Hope and set the trend of the second sequel in a franchise leaning into more mature, darker themes. Numerous entertainment properties have attempted to replicate its jump in darkness, with The Dark Knight, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves serving as examples of successes.
Here is the official description for the franchise’s latest game, Spider-Man: Miles Morales:
The latest adventure in the Spider-Man universe will build on and expand Marvel’s Spider-Man through an all-new story. Players will experience the rise of Miles Morales as he masters new powers to become his own Spider-Man. With PS5’s ultra-fast SSD, players can near-instantaneously fast-travel across Marvel’s New York City, or feel the tension of each one of Miles’s web-swings, punches, web shots, and venom blasts with the DualSense wireless controller’s haptic feedback. Highly-detailed character models and enhanced visuals across the game intensify the story of Miles Morales as he faces great, new challenges while learning to be his own Spider-Man.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is available exclusively on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Spider-Man 2 is set to be released sometime in 2023 for the PS5
