X-Men star Tye Sheridan played coy when asked about a potential return as Cyclops for the MCU.
After Fox was purchased by Disney in 2019, the rights to the X-Men universe were reverted back to Marvel Studios. After a nearly two-decade-long stint as the purveyors of the X-Men franchise, Fox’s tenure came to an end with Dark Phoenix. By that point, the franchise had entirely been rebooted with the younger cast, with heavyweights like Tye Sheridan and Sophie Turner stepping into the roles of Scott Summers/Cyclops and Jean Grey.
It’s unclear if the Marvel Cinematic Universe will directly reboot the X-Men franchise or take on certain components from the Fox films. The MCU recently opened up the multiverse, allowing opportunities for the Fox characters to be easily integrated into the larger Marvel franchise. While that possibility may be explored in the future, it doesn’t look like Tye Sheridan sees as a future within the MCU.
In a chat with Looper to discuss The Card Counter, Tye Sheridan, who starred as Cyclops was asked if he would return as the character for the MCU. While he didn’t deny it, Sheridan also wasn’t explicitly for it.
“I don’t really know. I mean, I think what I love about the ‘X-Men’ franchise is that it’s exploring really important things, I think historically, if the franchise kept that going, that would be really interesting to me. But I think it’s obviously, the context of who’s involved, what the films are about – I think it’s hard to say.”
One can only imagine what the brass at Marvel Studios has planned for the X-Men franchise. Precedent states that Fox X-Men actors can appear in the MCU, albeit as different characters – see Ralph Bohner from WandaVision. Only time will tell if Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, and the rest of the Fox X-Men actors are asked to return to the MCU, or if their roles will simply be recast.
Here is the official synopsis for Tye Sheridan’s Dark Phoenix:
This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.
Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.
Dark Phoenix is now available on Digital HD, 4k Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding Tye Sheridan and the future of the X-Men!
