‘Venom: Let There Be Carnage’: Tom Hardy On First Film’s Lackluster Critical Reception

Venom: Let There Be Carnage star Tom Hardy opened up about the first middling critical reception.

Many critics were left scratching their heads when 2018’s Venom ended up becoming one of the most successful and beloved films of the year. The first film in the Tom Hardy franchise was mostly written off by critics but audiences absolutely adored it for its chaotic action sequences and no-holds-barred performances.

In a recent interview with CinemaBlend ahead of the sequel’s release, Tom Hardy was asked to discuss what he thought about the first Venom’s less than stellar critical reception.

“I think with anything, you want something to do well that you care about. And obviously, it didn’t meet… it didn’t carry any water with the critics. (laughs) They literally panned us. But the audiences turned out in droves, which was what was so lovely about it. It was like watching an underdog be lifted up and be presented and enjoyed and relished for what it was. We got straight on the phone to Tom Rothman at Sony and said, ‘Look, can we put a pitch in to do the second one, because we’re really keen to take what we learned from the first and get on and start writing that second one.’ (To) get on the floor again and see if we can push it further.”

The first Venom film ended up grossing over $850 million at the global box office, far exceeding expectations. It remains to be seen how well Venom: Let There Be Carnage does in the wake of COVID-19.

Here is the synopsis for Sony’s first Venom film:

“The evolution story of Marvel’s most enigmatic, complex and badass character – Venom! Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) is a broken man after he loses everything including his job and fiancée. Just when his life is at its lowest, he becomes host to an alien symbiote which results in extraordinary superpowers – transforming him into Venom. Will these powers be enough for this new lethal protector to defeat great evil forces, especially against the far stronger and more weaponized symbiote rival, Riot?”

Directed by Ruben Fleischer from a script written by Jeff Pinkner & Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marcel, Venom stars Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate, Ron Cephas Jones, and Woody Harrelson.

Venom is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD, while Andy Serkis’ Let There Be Carnage will hit theaters on October 1.
