X-Men star James McAvoy has discussed potentially returning as Professor X in the MCU.
Ever since Fox was purchased by Disney, Marvel heads have been patiently waiting to see how the house of mouse incorporates the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the multiverse now wide open, the MCU is able to bring in dozens upon dozens of storylines and characters that normally wouldn’t fit the original, pre-Loki universe. It’s likely that the X-Men will be folded into the MCU through the multiverse, but it remains to be seen if the original Fox cast members will return to reprise their roles.
In a chat with Comicbook.com, James McAvoy – who played Professor X in the rebooted X-Men films – was asked if he had discussed with Marvel head honcho Kevin Feige a possible return as his character. McAvoy candidly discussed that no talks had been held and that he would return only if the story was good.
“It was good writing, and I was excited. If people offer me good writing, I’m always going to be excited, but I do feel like I’ve had a good ending with Charles and I got to explore some really good stuff, particularly in the first two movies that I did for him as a character. So if my time is done, I’m happy with the time that I spent and the time that I was given and if good writing comes in and people want to do stuff with me, I’ll always be open to that, but it’s got to be good.”
James McAvoy doesn’t seem too keen to return but he does leave the possibility open, which is interesting. As for Kevin Feige? Well, the Professor X actor had nothing but positive things to say about Marvel Studios’ President.
“They’re clever people. They’re so good at putting their stuff together. They’ll figure out where to do it, but that might not involve people who’ve done it before. It might be a complete reimagining. And as a fan, I’m down for that as well and I’d be excited to see what happens next. If what happens next involves us, then that could be cool, but I’m not sure what way they’re going to go with it, basically. But as a fan, I’m excited to see whatever way they go.”
While a full-fledged appearance may not be in the works, a cameo as Professor X would be a brilliant way to bring the Fox set of films into the larger MCU. Of course, we don’t know when the X-Men will formally join the MCU, but it looks like the mutants may be the plan once the Kang storyline is wrapped up. Rumors have suggested that Professor X will pop up in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, but only time will tell if those manifest.
Here is the official synopsis for James McAvoy’s Dark Phoenix:
This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.
Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.
Dark Phoenix is now available on Digital HD, 4k Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding James McAvoy and the future of the X-Men!
