James McAvoy isn’t holding his breath over a possible return as Professor X in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
It’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years since we first saw James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender portray young Professor X and young Magneto respectively for the first time in X-Men: First Class. Although some were skeptical about the film when it was first announced, especially at the prospect of seeing younger actors play the roles made iconic by Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, the performances of both James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender received much praise, and with the Mutants now part of the MCU, some are curious to see if they will be implemented.
James McAvoy was last seen as Professor X in Dark Phoenix, which was one of the last of the 20th Century Fox era of the X-Men film franchise. For most fans, the film ended much of the established stories on a whimper. Now that they will soon be part of the MCU, some are wondering if James McAvoy is hopeful to return. Well, his answer may surprise you a bit.
In an interview with Collider, James McAvoy expressed satisfaction with what he’s done with the role, and although he’s not opposed to returning, he’s not going to be devastated if the MCU moves on without him:
“I feel like, yeah. I feel like I got to explore, not everything I wanted to explore, because there’s always more, surely, but I got to explore a ton of Professor X, and I feel quite satisfied with what I got out of him as a performer. It’s not to say that you don’t ever want to, you never want to come back, and you never want to do it again, and all that kind of stuff. You never say never, as I believe James Bond once said. But I’m not chomping at the bit. I’m not going to be gutted and desperately sad if it never happens again.”
If Marvel Studios opts to recast Professor X, effectively replacing James McAvoy and/or Patrick Stewart, that new actor certainly has some big shoes to fill. Regardless of where the journey during the Fox era ended, fans really responded to James McAvoy’s portrayal of young Professor X, and at the very least, we will always have his great work to revisit no matter what.
Here is the synopsis for Dark Phoenix:
“This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.”
Written and directed by Simon Kinberg, Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain.
Dark Phoenix is now available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding James McAvoy and the future of the X-Men in the MCU, and be sure to subscribe to Heroic Hollywood’s YouTube channel for more original video content.
