Venom: Let There Be Carnage director Andy Serkis says the Marvel sequel pushes the limits of the PG-13 rating.
With R-rated superhero films like Logan, Deadpool, and Joker becoming major successes, many were hoping that Venom: Let There Be Carnage would get the adult-only treatment. The film’s characters perfectly lend themselves to a mature, gory story so it was a no-brainer to spring for the coveted but young audience-restricting R. In the end, Venom: Let There Be Carnage managed to nab a PG-13 rating just like its predecessor. While some might be disappointed that they won’t see their favorite heroes and villains in their goriest forms, director Andy Serkis has assured fans that the film pushed the limits of the PG-13 rating.
In a chat with IGN, director Andy Serkis opened up about the Venom sequel’s rating and how a PG-13 was needed so the Tom Hardy film could reach a larger audience.
“You could go down an R-rated adult version of this. Of course you could. You could have done that with the last film. But we wanted to reach a big audience with this and… there are several rules you have to abide by. However, having said that, I think we have pushed to the very limits [with] the danger and darkness and the threat and the menace of Carnage.”
“Just because you don’t see so much gore — perhaps there’s not so much blood or… seeing heads being bitten off — you can still suggest that. The suggestion, leaving it to the audience’s imagination, can be just as powerful. I think that’s just what we managed to do. It’s certainly not shying away from the darkness. And the real heart of Carnage as a character isn’t compromised at all.”
Andy Serkis does have a fair point. Films like A Quiet Place, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and The Dark Knight have pushed the PG-13 rating to its furthest limits and have succeeded despite not being for adults only. It remains to be seen just how far Venom: Let There Be Carnage pushes the limits of the rating from the perspective of audiences.
