Warner Bros. is reportedly developing several Mortal Kombat spin-offs after the success of the live-action reboot.
All of this year’s films from Warner Bros. are notably getting a day and date release in theaters and on HBO Max. Godzilla vs. Kong had a successful run on streaming and in theaters, while The Suicide Squad struggled at the box office. Another success for Warner Bros. this year with the new model was Mortal Kombat.
Mortal Kombat only grossed $82 million worldwide, but the film is the most-watched release on HBO Max to date with 5.5 million households in its first 17-days. While success is hard to determine during the pandemic, Variety reports Warner Bros. is moving full steam ahead with spin-offs centering on the characters in the Mortal Kombat universe.
Here is the synopsis for the film:
Hunted by the fearsome warrior Sub-Zero, MMA fighter Cole Young finds sanctuary at the temple of Lord Raiden. Training with experienced fighters Liu Kang, Kung Lao and the rogue mercenary Kano, Cole prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions to take on the enemies from Outworld in a high-stakes battle for the universe.
Directed by Simon McQuoid from a script written by Greg Russo, Mortal Kombat stars Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Briggs, Josh Lawson as Kano, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Sisi Stringer as Mileena and Elissa Cadwell as Nitara. Lewis Tan is also on board as a new edition to the franchise Cole Young.
