Benedict Cumberbatch teased that Spider-Man: No Way Home is a “daring” film.
Spider-Man: No Way Home will be the fourth Marvel Cinematic Universe film to hit theaters in 2021, and after the long-awaited first trailer dropped, fans got incredibly excited to see how Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) factors into the newest chapter in the story of Peter Parker (Tom Holland).
The trailer teased that some Multiverse action is in play, which makes sense given that Benedict Cumberbatch is set to reprise his role as Stephen Strange in his upcoming sequel, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. During Disney Investors Day last winter, Kevin Feige confirmed that WandaVision, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would tie in together as a narrative, which has some serious implications for the characters.
Benedict Cumberbatch appeared on the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast promoting his new Netflix film, The Power of the Dog, which some critics are hailing as an early Oscar contender featuring one of his most-acclaimed performances to date. Naturally, he was asked about Spider-Man: No Way Home, to which he hailed as something really exciting:
“There will be a lot of debate about it, I’m sure, but it’s a daring, brilliant concept… It’s gonna be a great film, I think. I think Jon Watts is a genius, all that team was on those three films are vastly brilliant,” he said. “Jon [Watts] is great, he’s got such a light touch, he’s so assured though. He’s great to hang out with on set. He’s very witty, but incredibly generous and supportive. Everything you want in a director. He’s young, he’s energetic, he gets the kids – I call myself an ‘older person’ to the older people. It’s an atmosphere on that set. It’s a bonded group, they’ve done three [movies] now, beautiful work environment. I really really enjoyed being on that set, I really did.”
It’ll certainly be interesting to see how Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange factors into the story of Spider-Man: No Way Home, especially when compared to the mentorship we’ve seen from the previous films that included Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). The fact that he’s teased that the film will cause a lot of debate is yet another element that is intriguing, because the introduction of the Multiverse will certainly bring constant discussion and arguments over which era of Spider-Man films were superior. Thankfully, we’re just about three months away.

“For the first time in the cinematic history of Spider-Man, our friendly neighborhood hero is unmasked and no longer able to separate his normal life from the high-stakes of being a Super Hero. When he asks for help from Doctor Strange the stakes become even more dangerous, forcing him to discover what it truly means to be Spider-Man.”
