Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has confirmed that he will be playing Morpheus in The Matrix Resurrections.
Warner Bros. and Lana Wachowski broke the internet yesterday by debuting the first look at the long-awaited The Matrix Resurrections, which sees Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss returning to their beloved sci-fi roles. One iconic actor was missing from the original trilogy’s trio: Laurence Fishburne, who starred as the elusive Morpheus. We’ve known for a while that Fishburne wasn’t asked to reprise his role as Morpheus, but it’s still disappointing to see the trailer celebrate the return of Reeves’ Neo but not Fishburne’s mystic. Then again, maybe Morpheus was in the trailer? And we just didn’t realize.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was brought in early into pre-production by Lana Wachowski to played a mysterious character. Rumors and speculation suggested that the Watchmen and Candyman actor would be playing Morpheus’ son but it looks like the man is playing Morpheus himself.
Taking to Instagram, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II shared a snap of him dual-wielding gun and rocking a crisp suit and round spectacles. He clearly does look like Morpheus, right down to his stylings, but the confirmation comes from Abdul-Mateen II’s not so subtle caption: “MORPHEUS”.
The trailer for the latest Matrix entry doesn’t explicitly state that Yahya Abul-Mateen II is playing Morpheus, though it does hint at it, with his character reminding that Neo that he knows who he is. Plus, Abdul-Mateen II’s mannerisms are in line with Laurence Fishburne’s as well, so it isn’t surprising that the Aquaman villain is playing the beloved character. What is surprising, however, is that actor revealed who he is playing. But then again, was it ever really a secret?
The Matrix and its two sequels collectively earned $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss portrayed Neo and Trinity, respectively, in all three chapters of the film series, each of which were directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski.
Directed by Lana Wachowski from a script she co-wrote with Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchel, the upcoming The Matrix sequel stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Toby Onwumere, Eréndira Ibarra, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Priyanka Chopra, Andrew Caldwell, and Brian J. Smith.
