The Batman star Jeffrey Wright discussed how unique Matt Reeves’ take on Gotham is.
One of the most anticipated blockbusters coming out of 2022 has to be Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which is set to be a darker, more detective-driven take on The Caped Crusader. The first look from the film, which premiered at last year’s DC Fandome, teased a Gotham that was (quite literally) Gothic and grimy in nature. It’s no surprise that the film was shot in Glasgow, perhaps the quintessential model of a working, modern Gothic city.
While Gotham has had a storied set of appearances in various live-action films, James Gordon star Jeffrey Wright believes that Matt Reeves’ take on the city is as unique as it gets. Wright opened up about The Batman‘s setting in a recent interview with IndieWire by describing how it was written in the script.
“…unlike Gothams we’d seen before. It was a Gotham we could touch. The way the Batmobile was described, I understood the aesthetic we were going for was something really palpable. If you squint your eyes in some backstreet of New York, you could see it appear.”
The previous live-action Gothams we have gotten have been diverse in nature, with some being full-on, dream-like gothic locales like Batman and Batman Begins, or just generic megalopolis-like cities in The Dark Knight.
The plot of The Batman is being kept under lock and key, but we know the film will follow Robert Pattinson as a younger version of Bruce Wayne, chronicling Batman during his second year as the Dark Knight of Gotham City. The film will also show off the hero using his skills as a detective more than what we’ve seen before in previous versions of the hero. It is also expected to be the first installment in a new trilogy of films with Pattinson.
Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as the Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Peter Sarsgaard as Gil Colson, Jayme Lawson as Bella Reál, with Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell as the Penguin.
The Batman is currently scheduled to hit theaters on March 4, 2022. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the upcoming DC film, and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more video content.
