Starting September 16, you can try the game before its launch with early access and open beta events for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Learn more about these events below, along with insight into new and enhanced features coming soon to Vanguard multiplayer.
Vanguard Early Access and Open Beta Dates
Available to those who pre-order Call of Duty: Vanguard for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, the early access period takes place from Thursday, September 16 at 10 a.m. PT to Saturday, September 18 at 10:00 a.m. PT. Play the new Champion Hill tournament mode, the new Patrol core multiplayer mode along with a suite of classic core modes on the maps Hotel Royal, Red Star, Gavutu, and Eagle’s Nest.
Featuring a strong variety of modes, maps, and environments, the Call of Duty: Vanguard Multiplayer Beta is just a slice of what players can expect on November 5, but still an excellent first chance for Xbox players to squad up and see why the game’s MP offering is going to be one of the biggest in the franchise’s history.
Make sure to be among the first to play on Xbox during the Early Access period and make the most of the weekend. To pre-order Vanguard for the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, click here.
Then, from Saturday, September 18 to Monday, September 20, Vanguard will enter its open beta period, allowing all players to participate*. Invite your friends and squad up.
As a note to Xbox Players: an Xbox Live Gold membership will be required to play in the early access period, but will not be required to play in the open beta period for most regions.
Additionally, those who participate in the Multiplayer Beta (either in the Early Access and/or the Open Beta periods) and who reach a Level of 20, will receive a Weapon Blueprint for use in Call of Duty: Vanguard at the game’s launch on November 5 and in Call of Duty: Warzone when the new map launches later this year.
Vanguard Multiplayer: More Ways to Play
Sixteen maps for traditional core play and four maps that make up the Champion Hill experience. Representing four major fronts in the war — Western Front, Eastern Front, Pacific, and North Africa — there’s a ton of variety coming to Call of Duty: Vanguard Multiplayer, and plenty of game modes to get the most out of them.
Compete in the New Champion Hill and Patrol Modes
Two brand new modes will arrive with the launch of Call of Duty: Vanguard. One is Champion Hill – a multi-arena survival tournament for solo, duos, and trios where tactics and strategy combine with quick-action, close-quarter gunplay. The other is Patrol –based on Hardpoint, this objective-based mode features a scoring zone in near-constant motion, forcing Operators to stay on the move.
These modes are in addition to classic modes like Team Deathmatch, Kill Confirmed, Domination, Search & Destroy, and more.
Set Your Combat Pacing
A brand-new feature to Call of Duty, the Combat Pacing system gives you control over how you want to play by breaking up the pacing into three distinct categories: Tactical, Assault, and Blitz. For the classic 6v6 player experience you know and love, pick Tactical. If you want to up the ante, go Assault. Need it fast and frenetic? Blitz is your go-to, jamming in high player counts for non-stop action and mayhem.
Set Combat Pacing to “All” to switch between the three throughout your play session.
Form a Clan, Earn Rewards Together
Gain more agency over your squad through the all-new Clan system. Clans will feature their own progression, emblems, and even Battle Pass-related rewards unlocked for your entire group, giving you and your squadmates all a share in the loot. With cross-generational support, both Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One players can form Clans and play together.
The Next Evolution of Gunsmith
Gunsmith returns, offering deeper weapon customization than ever before with up to ten attachment slots on certain weapons, allowing for nearly endless possibilities to enhance every combat scenario and playstyle.
Try the “Buck Slug” attachment for Shotguns, loading shells filled with short-range buckshot and a slug round for longer-range. This combination is just one way ammo can change for weaponry – expect other attachments that adjust a weapon’s caliber up or down to affect bullet penetration, fire rate, and more.
Riot Shields are also making a return in addition to two melee options: a standard-issue knife at launch and a bayonet charge for weapons that can equip the underbarrel blade. Akimbo is also available on select weapons for a high power, close-range option.
Reactive Environments, Maneuvering, and Blindfire
Reactive gameplay environments are coming to Vanguard, so you can expect to blast through designated weak points, break down doors and windows, destroy tiles, and generally whittle down the environment throughout the match. Even watch as dust kicks up in the air during a firefight from bullets hitting different surfaces.
The cover system also allows for new strategies: the first is mounting, which returns from previous games, though Operators can move their weapons across vertical and horizontal surfaces as well. The other is blindfire, where you will sacrifice accuracy but can take shots at your enemies without exposing yourself to imminent danger.
Perks and Proficiencies
Operator Perks and Weapon Perks – now known as Proficiencies – are making a return. Just to highlight a couple of examples, pick Lightweight for faster movement speed, or equip the Weapon Perk Gung-Ho, allowing Operators to fire with the weapon while sprinting. Prepare for Field Upgrades, too.
Become the Original Special Forces
The Operators of Vanguard represent a global cast of countries, cultures, ethnicities, and walks of life. Through Sledgehammer’s diverse writing team and an expert World War II historian, these fictional characters are brought to life like never before.
Enhanced Operator Backgrounds and Quips
Get to know each character’s personal story through an extended background for each Operator. You can expect to hear more unique dialogue from these characters via an expansion of the Quip system, bringing out their personalities.
Earn Operator XP, Equip Favorite Weapons
Earn Operator XP – separate to regular, weapon, Battle Pass, and Clan XP — to unlock new cosmetics, skins, calling cards, finishing moves and more just by playing matches with a specific Operator. New to Call of Duty, each Operator also has a Favorite Weapon; equip this weapon for added bonuses like additional earned XP.
See You in the Field
As you have learned today, the Call of Duty: Vanguard multiplayer experience is going to bring a massive offering to players at launch, in addition to the viscerally powerful single-player campaign and brand new Zombies experience from Treyarch.
