Zachary Levi would be disappointed if Shazam and Black Adam never face off on screen.
For years, Dwayne Johnson was attached to portray Black Adam in the DC Extended Universe. Originally, the plan was for him to appear as the character in the Shazam! origin story as an antagonist, but it was decided that Black Adam would receive his own feature film instead. Zachary Levi ended up portraying the original Captain Marvel, who faced off against Mark Strong’s Doctor Sivana in his first film.
Both Black Adam and Shazam! Fury of the Gods wrapped principal photography, and fans are excited to see Dwayne Johnson finally bring DC’s antihero to life as well as to see the further adventures of the Shazam Family. But given the characters’ iconic connection as adversaries in the comics, fans are eager to see the two face off on the big screen at some point, and Zachary Levi is excited about the prospect as well.
At this time, Zachary Levi is uncertain whether or not a face off against Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam is in development. During an appearance at Dragon Con 2021, the Shazam star pondered the possibility, expressing that he’d be bummed if it never came into fruition:
“I would love to punch The Rock in the face… it would be a dream… Honestly, all those things are way above my pay grade. I have no idea how all of these things are going to ultimately carve up. I know that he’s a very busy man, and very successful. Again, very busy doing other movies. So, I don’t know if and when there is ever going to be that. I hope so!
“Given the comic and the canon and all that stuff, I think it would be a bummer if Captain Marvel and Black Adam didn’t have at least their one meeting, whatever that’s going to be. You know, I’ll just show up and put on the suit…”
As of right now, no plans are in place for Shazam and Black Adam to face off yet, but for the time being, Zachary Levi is down to face off against Dwayne Johnson at some point. After all, DC fans have been waiting for years, so here’s hoping that it happens sooner rather than later.
Here is the official synopsis for Zachary Levi’s first Shazam! movie:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quick.
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Fulton, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, and Djimon Hounsou.
Shazam! is available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD, while Black Adam will hit theaters on July 29, 2022 and Fury of the Gods will hit theaters on June 2, 2023.
