Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings racked up over $8 million in Thursday night previews.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is Marvel Studios’ first film to exclusively hit theatres since 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Expectations for the film have been through the roof, especially after early fan screenings and reviews pointed at Marvel’s latest being one of its very best. Well, the film officially debuted last night and managed to rack up $8.8 million in Thursday night previews, proving that Simu Liu’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is solidified.
The Shang-Chi preview numbers are the second-highest during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The reigning champion is Marvel’s Black Widow, which opened with a cool $13.2 million two months ago. Simu Liu’s Marvel debut is expected to break the Labor day weekend record with a $90-million plus opening worldwide. Black Widow, on the other hand, managed to bring in $80 million during its opening weekend.
While Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ Thursday night preview numbers aren’t anything to laugh at, many might be wondering why Black Widow‘s numbers were higher. For one, the Delta variant is currently making its way through North America, leaving many anxious to return to cinemas. On a more positive note: it’s Labour day weekend, which means there isn’t much rush from families and fans to immediately go see the latest and greatest Marvel has to offer. With kids going back to school in some parts of the country, parents might want to skip the film altogether this weekend in favor of prep for the new year. Hopefully, Siu Liu’s solo outing holds great legs and proves that Marvel and cinemas as a whole can prosper even against a pandemic.
