‘Shang-Chi’ Producer On The Film’s Place In The MCU’s Timeline

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings producer Jonathan Schwartz discussed when the film takes place in the MCU’s timeline.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has a vast, expansive timeline that spans decades. While only a few films have explored past periods, most of Marvel’s late takes place in the present day. However, numerous events in the MCU have happened since Iron Man revealed himself in 2008, including Thanos wiping away half of the universe’s life. So, it begs the question, how exactly does Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings fit into the larger MCU?

It’s clearly a contemporary film, but when in the timeline are we introduce to Simu Liu’s hero? Beyond that, we know that the elusive Ten Rings organization was first introduced in Iron Man, and likely has a long, storied history. In a recent interview with Comicbook.com, Marvel producer Jonathan Schwartz discussed Shang-Chi’s place in the larger MCU.

“Part of what excited us about the movie is, yes, it’s a new character. Yes, it’s an origin story. But there are many organic ways to make it feel like this movie’s always been in the fabric of the MCU, and sort of turning that timeline back and kind of understanding what was happening to [Shang-Chi’s father] Wenwu and the Ten Rings along the way was a really fun exercise we got to do.”

Director Destin Daniel Cretton revealed earlier last month that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings takes place in a post-snap world. The film is set to feature numerous flashbacks to Shang-Chi’s childhood, which should give us some insight into how the Ten Rings organization came to be.

Here is the synopsis for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings:

“Simu Liu stars as Shang-Chi in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. Shang-Chi must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.”

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script written by David Callaham, the upcoming Marvel film stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, and Tony Leung. The upcoming movie will hit theaters on September 3, 2021.
