Marvel producer Jonathan Schwartz opened up about the rumors that suggest Ant-Man will appear in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to hit cinemas this weekend, making it the first film the studio has exclusively released in theaters since 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. Excitement for Shang-Chi is through the roof, and rightfully so, as the film is the first stand-alone film from a new hero since Captain Marvel, and it has a primarily Asian-led cast. Beyond that, the film also ties into previous Marvel projects like Doctor Strange and The Incredible Hulk.
Thanks to promotional footage, we know that Benedict Wong’s Wong and Tim Roth’s Abomination will be returning in Shang-Chi. What’s interesting to note is that the film takes place in San Francisco, where Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man series took place. Since we know that characters from other films are popping up, it isn’t out of the question to think that Ant-Man will show up in Marvel’s latest, especially because of his close proximity to Shang-Chi. This has led many to believe that Rudd will be cameoing in Shang-Chi before Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. In a recent chat with The Direct, Marvel producer Jonathan Schwartz strategically addressed the rumor, neither confirming nor denying.
“We did talk about other characters who might make sense, both in San Francisco and elsewhere, so there are few different iterations [with] other folks who could have popped up. I think there’s always a little bit of give and take there. But you know, the script evolved over time, into what it was, and ultimately we were telling Shang’s story, so I think we’re very happy with the version that ended up on screen.”
It does seem unlikely that Ant-Man will appear in the film, though we have gotten surprise cameos in the past. Most notably, Doctor Strange appeared in Thor: Ragnarok and Bruce Banner in a post-credits sequence for Iron Man 3. That being said, it’s moot to speculate considering the film will be released in less than a day. Soon enough we’ll know if Paul Rudd and his orange slices will be sharing the screen with Shang-Chi.
Here is the synopsis for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings:
“Simu Liu stars as Shang-Chi in Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings. Shang-Chi must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization.”
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script written by David Callaham, the upcoming Marvel film stars Simu Liu, Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen, Florian Munteanu, Benedict Wong, Michelle Yeoh, and Tony Leung. The upcoming movie will hit theaters on September 3, 2021.
