A new What If…? episode features an easy-to-miss Captain America: The Winter Soldier easter egg.
The latest episode of Marvel Studios’ What If…? is the darkest yet, and perhaps the grimmest thing the Marvel Cinematic Universe has done since snapping away half of all living life. The episode saw the core Avengers crew being murdered by an off-the-edge Hank Pym. Pym’s reasoning for offing the team was that he blamed Nick Fury and Shield for letting his daughter die as an agent for them. The episode failed to mention how exactly Hope Pym died, but clearly, a mission went awry and she never lived to tell the tale. However, an easter egg that most of us missed might point out how the would-be Wasp died.
In a chat with Discussing Film, writer A. C. Bradley discussed how the What If…? episode featured an easy-to-miss reference to Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
“I think it’s still in the final cut of the episode, is there a line that she was killed outside Odessa? Like so many months ago? Yeah, go watch The Winter Soldier. No one’s figured out that Easter egg. I don’t think anyone at Marvel figured out that Easter egg.
In the episode, Nick Fury explicitly mentions that Hope was killed on a mission outside Odessa, Ukraine. If we look back to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, we realize that Hope was killed by none other than Bucky Barnes’ maniacal alter-ego. In the film, Sacarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff reveals how she was on a mission outside Odessa, Ukraine. There, The Winter Soldier showed up and assassinated the individual she was escorting out.
Clearly, Hope is a substitute for Natasha Romanoff in this What If…? story. In this case, Hope died alongside the person she was escorting out. Seeing as The Winter Soldier is the one who killed Hope, it’s clear that Hank has beef with the brainwashed Bucky, not the Avengers.
