Dr. Martens is the blueprint for the ultimate black stomper boots. The iconic shoe brand’s story starts from the beginning of the 1900s, but the 1460 boot style wasn’t created until 1960 during a time when there was a social revolution and dramatic cultural changes happening. While it was initially worn by factory workers, it was soon adopted by British youth culture, and it was famously worn by Pete Townshend of The Who. Later, it was adopted by those who loved grunge and nu-metal during the ’90s and early ’00s. And then during the ’00s, it really took off among the fashion crowd. The likes of Raf Simons and Marc Jacobs have collaborated with the brand, and today, at every fashion week, you’ll nearly always spot someone wearing a pair of the boots on the street outside the shows.
The cementing of its place among the street style set 60 years after its creation is clear proof of this boot style’s longevity. I’ve also had the chance to wear the iconic boots and try them out with various outfits. From turn-up jeans to floral dresses, I honestly think you could wear these shoes with anything in your wardrobe (even a ball gown if that’s your vibe). Thanks to their classic lace-up style and unostentatious design, they can be worn seamlessly with any look. I’ve worn three of my favourite looks with the 1460 boots below, and you can keep scrolling for more outfits and shop key Dr. Martens boots.
Style Notes: Jeans with DMs is a given, really. Up top, however, I like to make it a bit smarter with an oversized white shirt and blazer.
Style Notes: There’s nothing I love more than making floral dresses seem less “girly,” and DMs really help do that. This is my ideal autumnal look.
Style Notes: Plissé trousers have been everywhere this summer, so this is how I’m taking them through to autumn—with a chunky knit and DMs.
Style Notes: Want to wear DMs with a suit? This is a great way to do it.
Style Notes: You don’t have to tuck your jeans in or roll them up with your Dr. Martens. Wide-leg versions are also a good fit.
Style Notes: Another look with a floral dress and Dr. Martens that I love.
Style Notes: The coolest way to wear your DMs? An all-black outfit.
Style Notes: Lean in to the utilitarian vibe by wearing a pair of khaki trousers with your DMs.
